The recital presents a versatile experience of the classical Carnatic raga Janaranjani and its changing moods. A lively start with konnakkol gives way to gentle humming of the tune by a Jazz vocalist. Then exuberant vocals burst forth, celebrating the joy of classical Carnatic Janaranjani with its graceful turns of gamaka and variations of sangathi. Melodious notes from a flute and a keyboard instrument flow into a rhythmic pattern of swaras and jatis, which build up to the well known Thyagaraja kriti “Vidajaaladuraa”. Jazz and instrumental interludes bring the focus back to melody. The singers then go on to invoke the divine mother addressing her as Janaranjani, the people’s goddess. Finally the singers, instrumentalists and konnakkol artists come together in a crescendo of raga and rhythm.
It started two years ago as a casual humming of a tune. When the similarity with the Carnatic raga Janaranjani struck Chandrashekhar, the hum morphed into a musical piece to showcase raga Janaranjani. The team comprising of Chandrashekhar Kalyanaraman, Uttara Swaminathan, Sucheta Sanyal, Adithya Rajan, Sai Prashanth Harihar and Swaminath Jayaraman refined the piece over several weeks to present this final rendition.
